Ophiopogon is a genus of evergreen, clump forming perennial grass-like plants that originate from around tropical asia, appearing to have quite tufted foliage which grow from short rhizomes. It is a member of the Asparagaceae family. Tiny flowers appear in summer on short stems that emerge on scapes just above the foliage. Occasionally, gloss coloured berries form after the flowers. Ophiopogon japonicus is a species Ophiopogon and produces tufts of dark green foliage, with pale lavender flowers in summer followed by glossy coloured purple-blue berries.
